So much of life is learned through experience. When we say/hear “I know just what you mean/feel” from someone who has not experienced the magnitude of your event, it evokes a polite smile and an inward “RIIIIGHT, you are so clueless!” Rather than denying the validity of someone’s experience bt playing it down or by shaming them, with a “you have to just….” what if we simply HEARD how their experience was. Readers Digest had an article on English according to the world.it describes a Vietnamese responding to someone in pain with the comment, “when I hear the words you speak, I feel sadness in my heart.” Sometimes silence is golden, a warm cozy place to rest and reflect; Oh my! they communicated more beautifully than most of us who have spoken the language our whole lives. |
