Hope – 2016-11-17

  • This week I was thinking about hope…
What is hope? According to Miriam Webster:
    intransitive verb
    1: to cherish a desire with anticipation <hopes for a promotion>
    2 archaic : trust
    transitive verb
1: to desire with expectation of obtainment
2: to expect with confidence : trust
Hope carries an expectation… as I contemplated hope, I (the one who loves my praise songs) had the first line of the hymn, On Christ the Solid I Rock I stand, come to mind, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness…Hope in Christ – His love, His forgiveness is a hope that does not fail. Hope in anyone/anything else carries those expectations that cause stress. For over a year now, I let go of hope – in anything other than Christ. It sounds odd, to be an optimistic person and say, “I have no hope apart from Christ.” But really, I don’t. All my hope is in Him. It is not fair to put hope/expectations on people, circumstances and events. It was quite helpful during the remodel, I’d like to open this day. Ok, a week later is fine… xyz isn’t done yet. “this is necessary, this is helpful, let’s focus on necessary first.”

Recently, when we were almost to Disneyland, Suzanne said, “well, we could do this instead… Whatever you want to do. It’s funny how things lose their life and death significance when that is not where your hope lies.
Disneyland? Great! Something else? That’s fine too! Hope in Christ? Now THAT is awesome! and THAT is where my hope lies.
